Flowers were left on Pier 14 in San Francisco to honor and remember 32-year-old Kate Steinle who was shot and killed Thursday.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Flowers were left on Pier 14 to honor and remember Kate. Friends say she was a true original.

"She was amazing. She was a very compassionate person, her smile was infectious," Heather Childress, Steinle' friend, said.

Childress and Elizabeth Turner gathered in North Beach to share memories and pictures of Kate at gatherings with friends.

"She was compassionate and had so much energy, and had the world in front of her," Turner said.

Kate was the kind of friend who was always there, when friends organized a charity bike ride for MS, Kate threw a fundraising dinner to help, without being asked.

Just last Thanksgiving, Kate sent a poem to friends, which begins: "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life..."

Now, her grateful friends can't believe she's really gone.
