Wednesday, February 1, 2017
A man has died after being shot by an off duty Contra Costa County sheriff's deputy in Alameda. Investigators say the dead man was apparently trying to break into the deputy's home while he was sleeping.

"I heard a series of gunshots and then there was a pause and more gunshots and yelling," a neighbor who did not want to be identified told abc7 news.

That's what the neighbor heard just before 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at the home near Buena Vista Avenue and Chestnut Street.

Soon after, she looked outside and saw a massive police response.

"There was an off duty law enforcement officer involved in a shooting," Alameda Police Lieutenant Jill Ottaviano said.

Police say an off duty contra costa sheriff's deputy was asleep inside this house when a man apparently tried to break in. The deputy woke up grabbed a gun and fired several shots. It's not clear whether the intruder was shot inside or outside the house, but he ended up collapsing in the driveway. This witness spokes through a translator.

"There was an African American male who was on the ground and they did first aid on him and took him away," witness Gabriel Quintanilla said.

"He wasn't moving at all. Next thing we knew they were taking him away in an ambulance," neighbor David Hoie said.

A swat team was called out, to check for a possible second suspect. But, no one was found.

Police officers went door to door this afternoon looking for information as to what happened, and why. The dead man's name has not been released, nor has the identity of the deputy.

The shelter in place order was lifted a short time later. No one else was hurt.
