"We did hear some cries for help. We then upgraded to a full confided rescue response," Contra Costa battalion chief Bob Atlas said.
Contra Costa fire says the man in his mid-30s who has not yet been identified, told officials he had been down the pipe for two days. The pipe located near the 3100 block of Buchanan Road, runs 15 feet deep.
A bystander walking by was the first to hear the cries for help.
"I heard him screaming for help and he asked me to help him," he explained.
Officials say the full rescue took around three hours, involving rescue teams digging near the area and eventually going down in the drain to try and get the man out.
They say he was responsive throughout the rescue and was taken to a local hospital.
"I just hope he is okay and he gets help. Just glad the police came they came really quick."
