SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A passenger of a dirtbike died at the scene of a multiple-vehicle collision on the Bay Bridge on Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened just before 6 p.m. and two lanes of eastbound I-80 were shut down for almost hours Sunday evening, causing major delays.

CHP says the victim who died was a 20-year-old man who was a passenger on a dirt bike that was involved in sideshow activity on the bridge. The 20-year-old already had an injury that he got from an earlier accident.

Officials say after the first accident, he abandoned his first dirt bike and was picked up by another dirt bike. In an attempt to avoid arrest for driving the wrong direction on the bridge, they drove over a concrete barrier and the passenger was ejected onto the freeway and hit and killed by a pickup truck.

The driver of the dirt bike was arrested, CHP says.

Oakland Fire Department, San Francisco Fire Department and CHP were on the scene.

According to authorities, all lanes were reopened as of 9:10 p.m.
