Crews removing final remaining Bay Bridge truss from old eastern span

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- The Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge now has an unobstructed view of the Bay and the Oakland skyline after contractors carefully removed the last truss of the old eastern span Tuesday.

The final truss was removed and carried away on a barge.

"I mean, they put this together with steam-driven equipment. There are only like five parts on the old east span. There are plates, angles, rivets, eyebars, and cables, and it's like a giant Lego set," Caltrans Chief Bridge Retrofit Engineer Brian Maroney said.

It's a Lego set that Maroney has thoroughly enjoyed taking apart.

"Some of the things we're opening up, no human eyes have seen for 80 years," Maroney said.
