Cal Fire said the incident happened around 2:35 p.m. between Scott Creek Beach and Greyhound Rock off Highway 1.
There was only one person in the vehicle. The 61-year-old driver, identified as a man from San Carlos, was transported to Stanford Medical Center with major injuries, Officer Jennifer Simmons said.
All southbound lanes on Highway 1 were closed for the recovery of the vehicle before reopening later Friday afternoon.

Major equipment was called in to tow the vehicle, along with emergency medical help.
