A memorial service was held for Camilleri Dec. 30, 2017.

Camilleri died on Christmas Eve when a car hit the back of his patrol vehicle on the Interstate 880 in Hayward. At the time of the accident, Camilleri was in the car with his partner, who survived.

The suspect, identified as a 22-year-old Hayward man, faces several felony charges. Investigators say he was likely intoxicated at the time.

Camilleri's mother called her son an "eternal hero" in a Facebook tribute, adding that it was Camilleri's lifelong dream to protect Californians as a member of CHP. The officer is survived by his wife and three children.
