Local charities benefiting on Giving Tuesday

Tuesday, November 29, 2016
Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement of fundraising for non-profit groups, and local charities are hoping to benefit.

The hashtag #GivingTuesday is trending on social media. Celebrities are urging us to shift our focus from buying for ourselves to helping others. Reese Witherspoon is asking people to support Girls Inc. Michael J. Fox is asking the public to donate to fund research for Parkinson's disease and Bill Gates is urging everyone to participate in Giving Tuesday, any way we like. Charities hope to match or surpass the $117 million donated globally last year.

A San Francisco nonprofit that would love your support is Lava Mae, which provides the homeless with mobile showers, toilets and more with pop up villages. Today, the woman who founded Lava Mae, Doniece Sandoval, was awarded the $500,000 grand prize from food company Kind Snacks through its Kind Foundation.

"It will help support our ability to support and design, pop up tool kits in a box," said Sandoval.
