Scientists: Great Barrier Reef damaged due to global warming

Tuesday, April 11, 2017
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Scientists say the effects of climate change are being seen on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

An aerial survey shows two-thirds of the reef has been damaged by coral bleaching - that's some 900 miles.

The survey comes from a group called the ARC Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies.

It's the second straight year of coral bleaching. Last year's was blamed partly on El Nino. But scientists say this year's bleaching is the result of record-high temperatures from global warming.
