It's holiday shipping crunch time for the Bay Area and beyond

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- You've finished your holiday shopping and now it's time for holiday shipping. The United States Postal Service says Monday is the busiest mailing day of the busiest two weeks of the year; those being the two weeks before Christmas.

The USPS expects to process 400 million packages during that time period. That's a 10 percent increase over last year.

Seven million pieces of mail will pass through the main post office in San Jose alone --169,000 of those "pieces" will be packages.

The facility, on Lundy Avenue, is a big as four football fields.

The machines there move 10,000 packages an hour.

"Until somebody figures out how to email a sweater, we're going to deliver it," said Augustine Ruiz, USPS Bay Area Spokesperson.



Like Santa Clause, the postal service does deliver on Christmas Day -- but prepare to pay a premium.

Tuesday, Dec. 19: FedEx Express Saver and USPS first class (this includes greeting cards)
Wednesday, Dec. 20: FedEx two-day, UPS 2nd Day Air, USPS Priority Mail
Thursday, Dec. 20: FedEx Overnight, UPS Next Day Air
Friday, Dec. 22: USPS Priority Mail Express
Monday, Dec. 25: FedEx Same Day
