SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Closing arguments begin today in the murder trial for the man accused of killing Kate Steinle. Jurors will have to decide between first or second degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, or acquittal.
The trial has been going on for nearly a month-- the jury could get the case today.

Defense attorneys for Jose Ines Garcia Zarate say the bullet he fired hit the ground, ricocheted and hit the victim, showing it was not deliberate, but an accident.

Prosecutors point to the fact that he threw the gun into the Bay, they say he was covering his tracks and that this is a murder case. Steinle was shot and killed two years ago at San Francisco's Pier 14. Her accused killer was set to be deported for the sixth time, but because of San Francisco's sanctuary city laws he was allowed to stay. That's why this case started a national debate over immigration

The jury will be able to consider first or second degree murder or involuntary manslaughter, if they decide to convict him.
