SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- A manual count of votes is getting underway in the Bay Area on Monday. The one percent manual tally is required before election results can be certified.

This is the final step of the election. Forget the machines - it's time to put the hands to work.

The votes have already been cast and counted, but to make it official in San Mateo County, they need to do the one percent manual tally.

This is legally required and must be done within 30 days following an election.

Officials say it ensures the accuracy of the vote before the results are certified.

So how do they do it?

They roll three 10-sided dice and match the three numbers to a corresponding precinct number. Then election officials will work in teams of four to manually read, call out, record and tally the votes.

This must be done in the 30 days following an election.

The public can watch all of this in person at the registration and elections division. In fact, past observers have even rolled the 10-sided dice to help pick the precincts.

It all starts at 8:30 a.m.
