South Bay leaders wash immigrants' feet outside ICE detention center

MORGAN HILL, Calif. (KGO) -- South Bay political and religious leaders washed the feet of immigrants as part of Holy Thursday.

They did so outside of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Morgan Hill.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo was among the local leaders who joined in. The head of the San Jose diocese says the ritual honored immigrants who have served the community.

He said it's especially significant given the current political climate.

"It is in front of this ICE building that symbolizes everything we're against," said Father John Pedigo. "They are for deportation, incarceration. They are for detention. They are for taking away the rights of many people."
