Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney was a harsh critic of President-elect Donald Trump during his campaign, but, according to ABC News, he has become a top candidate for Trump's secretary of state.

Romney served as governor of Massachusetts from 2003-2007 and was the GOP presidential candidate during the 2012 election. He co-founded the private equity firm Bain Capital in 1985.

During a nationally televised speech on March 3, Romney harshly criticized Trump saying, "Here's what I know: Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud."

Romney, Trump and incoming White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus met for dinner in New York on Tuesday night, leading to speculation that Trump will select Romney for secretary of state.
