1 dead, several injured after shooting while filming music video in Oakland, police say

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Oakland officials gave an update on the shooting that left one person dead and several others injured Monday night.

Police say five people were struck by gunfire, according to Acting Police Chief Darren Allison.

One person died. He was identified as 18-year-old Mario Navarro.

The age of the victims injured range from 15 to 63 years old.

One person remains at the hospital.

The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. on Monday at the Valero Gas Station in the 5900 block of Macarthur Boulevard.



Approximately 40-50 people were at a location where individuals were filming a music video. While the recording was occurring, gunfire broke out from multiple shooters in various directions," said Acting Police Chief Darren Allison.

When officers arrived, there were no victims at the scene but officers found several shell casings.

Police said bullets went into cars and into a local businesses.

Police said the victims took themselves to several area hospitals.

The victims were listed in stable condition.



Police are looking into the possibility the shooting is gang related.

Captain Tony Jones is with Oakland's Operation Ceasefire, an ongoing effort to stop homicides.

"The biggest threat now is retaliatory shootings--the groups going back and forth and will we continue to see violence that will stem from this particular incident," said Captain Jones.

Monday night's shooting happened in council member Kevin Jenkins district.

"I'm outraged. I'm disgusted. The community is outraged. We are disgusted," said Jenkins. "Mario Navarro's life was stolen from him."

Local city leaders and police say they're doing all they can to stop shootings and the deaths. But they need help.

"Together-- we're talking about with ceasefire-- if we all come together we can defeat gun violence in our city," said Jenkins.

"This has to end. It must end. We must deal with the proliferation of guns on our streets at every single level of government," said Mayor Sheng Thao.
