Oakland searches for loved ones, fire investigation continues

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Many in Oakland are searching for the loved ones who may have been trapped in a fire that broke out late Saturday evening at a warehouse known as the Ghost Ship.

Of the nine people confirmed dead, four bodies have been recovered from the building as of 4:41 p.m.
Citizens have been showing up to the scene to try and see if their friends and family were able to escape the devastating scene.

Officials are still trying to figure out how to shore up the building to recover the victims.

A music event took place in the venue last night and was an underground event that was mostly publicized online.

One young woman was searching for her brother and his girlfriend.

A neighbor described the warehouse as "junky" with some work spaces for art and a small area to gather in.




There have been numerous complaints by neighbors about parties at night, noise and materials that were dumped in front of the building.

Crews are prepared to work through the weekend and into Monday. They are considering using cranes, robots and cadaver dogs to locate the victims inside.

The fund had raised about $40,000 out of its goal of $100,000 as of 3:30 p.m.
