The first lady does not make a lot of public appearances. That's why her role as keynote speaker Thursday at the State Department's International Women of Courage Awards is grabbing headlines.

"Together we must declare that the era of allowing the brutality against women and children is over," she said.

Melania personally handed out the awards to 12 women who have overcome injustice and danger to transform their societies.

A few hours later, Trump and Melania hosted the Women's Empowerment Panel at the White House.

The administration's four female cabinet members were there.

"We want every daughter in America to grow up, realize her dreams," said Trump.

Critics point out that 1980 was the last time a president's cabinet had so few women. But they hope Trump will stick to his promise to champion affordable childcare and paid family leave.
