SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose police again declared an unlawful assembly Sunday night following England's victory over Mexico in the World Cup, due to the downtown gathering of hundreds of people leading to chaos, even ending with a man getting shot.

In a statement on Monday morning, the San Jose Police Department said about 200 to 300 people flooded the area near San Fernando and South Second streets after 10 p.m., following England's 3-2 win over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals in Mexico City.

The gatherings happened near SAP Center and Discovery Meadow, where the World Cup watch parties were held.

According to police, the crowd blocked traffic on San Fernando and South Second streets for more than an hour, set off fireworks, drank in the street and engaged in other unruly behavior.

When officers tried to disperse the crowd, several people threw bottles and other objects at them, prompting police to declare an unlawful assembly at 11:24 p.m. and order people to leave the area by heading east on San Fernando Street toward Fourth Street.

Police said the crowd then largely complied with the dispersal order, and no more enforcement action was needed.

At 1:48 a.m. Monday, officers responded to reports of gunfire near South First and San Salvador streets, and they detained a man believed to be connected to the shooting. They recovered a firearm, police alleged.

A short time later, a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound arrived at a local hospital. Police said investigators believe he had been wounded during the shooting. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Last week, on Tuesday, watch party celebrations after Mexico's victory over Ecuador turned violent in San Pedro Square, leaving two people stabbed, prompting multiple arrests and prompting police to issue unlawful assembly orders.

Ahead of Sunday's quarterfinal, the city moved the official World Cup watch party to SAP Center and Discovery Meadow.
