Slow CA vote count criticized by Trump, GOP governor hopeful Steve Hilton: 'Another Democrat fiasco'

Updated 2 hours ago
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- As California continues to tally election results, state leaders are urging patience as President Donald Trump again complains about the use of mail-in ballots and delays in the results.

In the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump accused Democrats of trying to "steal" the California gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral primaries without any evidence to support his claim.

He also told reporters that the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles is investigating the votes, but that office declined to comment on Trump's remarks in response to ABC News.

During a small business roundtable in San Francisco on Thursday, gubernatorial frontrunner Steve Hilton said Californians should not have to wait so long for results, though he stopped short of repeating Trump's claims of election interference.

"This election is turning into yet another Democrat fiasco," Hilton said. "It is a complete disgrace that now, nearly two days after the election, barely half the votes, just over half the votes have been counted."

With many races still undecided, outcomes could take days or even weeks as ballots are counted, including in the governor's race.

California law allows ballots to be counted if they arrive up to a week after Election Day, as long as they are postmarked by then. State officials have defended the state's election laws as necessary to ensure accuracy. By law, the vote count must be completed within 13 days of the election, which falls next Monday.

In a social media post, Gov. Gavin Newsom asked whether Hilton agreed with Trump's "unfounded assertion of wrongdoing."

Hilton said his campaign is monitoring the process but has not seen evidence requiring intervention.

"We're watching everything very closely. Our team is on top of everything. We've got lawyers standing by if needed. At this point, we haven't seen any need to intervene in that way, but we are very frustrated," he said.

Trump has for years criticized mail-in voting, repeatedly making false claims about widespread voter fraud. Hilton has not made those same allegations but called for changes to the system.

"I think there were points of consensus that everyone can get behind some degree of early voting: making Election Day a holiday, mail-in votes for those who need it by request," Hilton said.

Democratic candidates pushed back on Trump's rhetoric. In a social media post, Xavier Becerra said the president is "trying to undermine confidence in our elections because he's a repeat loser here."

Tom Steyer, currently in third place, wrote, "We count every ballot. Thank you for your patience as we give democracy time to work."

The gradual release of results -- including gains by Democrats as later ballots are counted -- was expected, as some voters waited until the final days to return their ballots.
