Allegedly armed man killed in police shooting at San Leandro Marina after welfare check

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- A man was shot and killed Thursday night after allegedly pointing a firearm at officers during a welfare check at the San Leandro Marina, according to police.

The San Leandro Police Department said officers responded at 8:07 p.m. after receiving a request to check on a man who had reportedly made suicidal statements to a friend and was said to be suffering from depression. Officers first searched for the man at a residence in the 14500 block of Santiago Road, but later found him sitting inside a vehicle near the boat launch at the San Leandro Marina, police said.

They spoke with the man for several minutes while he stayed inside the vehicle. During the encounter, the man took out a firearm and pointed it at officers, leading to the shooting, police alleged.

Emergency medical personnel treated the man at the scene, but he was pronounced dead. Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Three officers were involved in the shooting, and none were injured, the department said.

ABC7 Eyewitness News spoke to Ciara Roundtree, who saw and heard everything.

"I heard six shots and then I saw police officers arrive and surround the vehicle," Roundtree said. "I heard them asking the male in the vehicle to exit the vehicle so they can give him medical attention, repeatedly. I did not see any waved weapon. I saw police officers surrounding him, telling him to put up his hands in the window of the car. No response from the man in the vehicle. I talked to people who were across the street and they showed me the angle of the guns and you can see the bullet went into the driver's window. They certainly could have de-escalated this without violence."

Police said they will conduct criminal and administrative investigations into the shooting, while the Alameda County District Attorney's Office will conduct a concurrent probe. The involved officers will be placed on administrative leave under department policy.

"While SLPD remains committed to transparency, the release of additional information related to this incident will be limited at this time to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and in accordance with applicable laws," the department said.
