Bay Area pilot dies in plane crash in remote area of Alaska, officials say

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A Bay Area pilot has been killed in a crash in a remote area of Alaska. It happened near Kanak Island.

Officials say Alaska State Troopers were notified of an overdue aircraft on June 18. The aircraft was believed to be flying between Yakutat and Fairbanks with only the pilot on board.

Rescue crews conducted a search and located the crashed plane the next day around 4 p.m. approximately 40 miles southeast of Cordova in a mountainous area near Kanak Island. The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene.

A GoFundMe identifies the pilot as Michael "Mike" Grimes of Concord.



The family says they will use the money raised for funeral expenses and to cover daily living expenses for his wife and two daughters.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
