Big Sur wildfires: Plaskett Fire grows to nearly 27,000 acres, surpassing Timber Fire in size

BIG SUR, Calif. (KGO) -- The Plaskett Fire in Big Sur has grown by about 10,000 acres since Sunday, expanding to nearly 27,000 acres and surpassing the size of the Timber Fire burning about 35 miles to the north.

Time-lapse video from Sunday showed smoke from the fire as it continued to spread. Evacuation orders are in effect as far south as San Luis Obispo County. Fire officials reported the blaze was 1% contained.

Farther north, the Timber Fire has burned more than 25,000 acres in Big Sur. More than 600 structures are threatened by the fire, and hundreds of people are under evacuation orders.

Evacuation shelters are open in Carmel and Cambria for residents affected by the fire. Portions of Highway 1 remain closed.



The Timber Fire was reported at 22% containment.
