Systemwide BART delay due to disabled train in Oakland frustrates riders

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Another day, another system-wide delay on BART.

"It's been an hour and 38 minutes," said Thaddeus Tolbert.

On Tuesday night, hundreds packed the Embarcadero Station in downtown San Francisco after an equipment problem and a disabled train caused a systemwide delay during rush hour.

Commuters filled not just the platforms, but also the trains themselves.

Many were just trying to end their day.

"I would love to go home because I woke up to take BART at 4:30 in the morning," said Tolbert.

BART has been plagued by a series of problems over the past couple of months.

It's something that customers say they are growing very tired of. Those problems include trains filling with smoke, fires near stations and a slew of technical issues.

Kimberly Hart says Tuesday was the first time she'd taken BART since the pandemic. But she says Tuesday's delay has left her with a bad impression.

"It really does. I knew that it would be kind of a gamble actually to take BART. So I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the future. But, for right now, I think I might just be taking my car to work," said Hart.

And for others waiting around to catch their trains, many have this message for BART leadership.

"It's not supposed to be like this. I've ridden BART ever since I was a little kid and it's never been like this," said Victor Turk.

In addition to the evening problems, BART service was also delayed by about 20 minutes Tuesday morning.
