SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- It's a birthday party 250 years in the making- with a San Francisco twist.

On Monday, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced on social media that the city's 4th of July show will be happening from the Golden Gate Bridge.

"We are launching fireworks off the two towers to celebrate the 250th birthday of the greatest country in the world," said Lurie.

The announcement has been welcomed by visitors and locals alike.

All of them excited to see the iconic landmark as the highlight of the city's celebration.

"I think it's fantastic. I've lived here for 25 years and don't remember that ever happening," said Kevin Furguson.

This 4th of July will be only the third time ever that the bridge has been used for a fireworks display.

The first time was back in 1987, during the bridge's 50th anniversary, and most recently, it was done in 2012.

One business owner says the historic display will help build on San Francisco's rebounding tourism and be a boon for the city as a whole.

"My best guess is we were about two years behind the other major cities in the U.S. but when it hit, when we started to come back, we came back in a big way. And now everybody wants to be in San Francisco," said Ben Bleiman.

Given the large crowds expected and the required shutdown of the bridge, officials are encouraging people to use public transit to get to viewing areas.

They also emphasize that the show will be visible from multiple parts of the Bay Area.

"We would probably either walk to be honest with you or just come out early," said Katy Masawi.

While there might be several spots to view the fireworks, the city's Marina District will likely be among the most popular.

Along Marina Boulevard, residents say they too are excited for the show.

But they also want the city to focus on public safety, especially after issues caused by a Formula 1 race earlier this year.

"I think the city can handle it and if people just behave, it should work out nicely," said Ferguson.

The fireworks are set to start at 9:30 p.m. and many we talked to say they plan on being there.

"4th of July with family and friends but since it's going down this year, we're going to show up," said Wanh Doronila.
