MENLO PARK, Calif. (KGO) -- Menlo Park-based Meta will use AI to verify age on its platforms.

The maker of Facebook and Instagram says the tool will scan photos and videos, analyze text and interactions to identify and remove users younger than 13.

We spoke with Meta's head of North American Safety about how it works.

"This technology lets us go beyond someone admitting they are 12 years old. We are able to look at posts -- about birthdays, what grade they are in -- across our platforms and comments to get a better picture of age and deactivate accounts that shouldn't be there.

Meta maintains that it is not using facial recognition on the images it scans. The technology focuses on things like height and bone structure to estimate age.
