SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The mother-daughter owners of a San Jose home daycare were sentenced for felony child endangerment on Friday.

Two unattended toddlers drowned in a backyard pool at the daycare in the fall of 2023.

Nina Fathizadeh pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 13 years and 6 months

Her mother, Shaheen Gheblehshenas, was convicted last month and was sentenced to 8 years.

"There is no sentencing that is going to bring those kids back or take away the pain and grief they're going to live with, or give anyone any kind of peace. The sole purpose of prison is punishment. They're not a threat to society. They have no criminal history. But I get it. You want to make an example," said Sina Fathizadeh, brother and son of the convicted daycare owners.

"We are incredibly relieved that both defendants have finally been held accountable and both face a significant punishment to account for this terrible loss," said O'Bryan Kenney, Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney.

Gheblehshenas was working at another unlicensed daycare at the time of the drowning.
