Noise complaints surge near Sonoma County Airport after FAA changes flight paths

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- Living the wine country dream. That's what Bill Foss wanted when he moved from the South Bay to Sonoma County more than 20 years ago.

"Make wine. Grow food. The dream. With that comes this notion of calm," said Foss.

But over the past year, that dream has started to crack.

Back in 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration approved a new flight path for planes taking off and landing at the Sonoma County Airport.

That flight path means planes, larger ones included, now fly only a few hundred feet over the homes of people, including Foss.

That's left Foss and many others feeling upset.

"Angry. Everyone around here feels angry. It's not just us," Foss said.

The flight paths are one concern, but people who live nearby also say it's the flight frequencies that are another issue.

Over the past few years Sonoma County Airport has grown considerably adding more and more flights.

A county supervisor said that after receiving around 1,000 airport noise complaints in 2024, that number rose to 30,000 in 2025. And for the first quarter of this year, the county has already had 16,000.

The issue has gotten so bad for the community that two local supervisors wrote a letter to the FAA, urging it to take action.

"As much as I can sit here and call the FAA out, I'm calling them in. I'm calling them in to have dialogue with us and make some improvements," said Supervisor James Gore.

The airport says it's onboard with having the FAA change the flight paths back to their pre-2024 routes.

As for Foss, he just hopes some change happens soon -- not just for him, but for everyone who lives nearby.

"Whether it's the airport, the county, the neighborhood or the FAA, this is, I think, very easily solved by getting the spirit of 'let's get this right. Let's find a solution,'" he said.

We did reach out to the FAA for comment but did not hear back as of Wednesday night.
