OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- It was the final day for a soul food institution in Oakland. Home of Chicken and Waffles served up its final pieces of fried chicken on Monday.

The restaurant has been open on 4th Street in Jack London Square since 2004.

The owner says it's time to move on.

"It will be a little sad, but I'm ready for the next chapter in life. I am very appreciative to the people in Oakland. Everyone that's helped build the business. I mean, look at this. This is great," said Derreck Johson, owner of Home of Chicken and Waffles.

The restaurant became a community gathering place and drew some well-known customers, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
