BROOKFIELD, Ill. -- Brookfield Zoo guests can see Kecil, a 1-year-old orangutan, and his surrogate mom, Maggie, at Tropic World Asia on Saturdays and Sundays starting April 4, 2015.
Kecil, a one-year-old orangutan at Brookfield Zoo, can be seen at Brookfield Zoo's Tropic World: Asia on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to noon. (Jim Schulz/Chicago Zoological Society)
Those are important milestones he needed to accomplish before having access to the habitat in Tropic World. (Jim Schulz/Chicago Zoological Society)
Since his arrival in June 2014, Kecil has been behind the scenes bonding with his surrogate mom, Maggie, as well as developing his climbing and coordination skills. (Chicago Zoological Society)
Kecil was just six months old when he came to Brookfield Zoo. (Jim Schulz/Chicago Zoological Society)
Kecil was born on January 11, 2014, at Toledo Zoo in Ohio. His mother was not interested in caring for him after a difficult delivery. ( Schulz/Chicago Zoological Society)
At four months, he went to Milwaukee County Zoo and was placed with another possible surrogate. They didn't bond as closely as hoped. (Jim Schulz/Chicago Zoological Society)
Kecil then met Maggie at Brookfield Zoo. Maggie, who had past experience as a surrogate, took to the baby quickly. (Jim Schulz/Chicago Zoological Society)
Maggie does not carry the young orangutan, but is protective of him, which will be good when they're in the main habitat, officials said. (Jim Schulz/Chicago Zoological Society)
