OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Gap is closing its last remaining East Bay store after nearly 26 years in Oakland.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco-based retailer confirmed to ABC7 Eyewitness News that the Gap location on Lakeshore Avenue will shut down this summer when its lease expires. A "For Lease or Sale" sign was posted outside the storefront Tuesday afternoon.

One longtime customer said the closure is disappointing for the neighborhood.

"I have many, many clothes from Gap, and the people who work here, they're fabulous," said Janet Sheard, an Oakland resident. "They're very kind. In fact, I wrote a letter to Gap headquarters expressing my disappointment they were closing Gap in my neighborhood."

Gap did not give a reason for the closure but said it is grateful for the team's dedication. The company added that employees will have the opportunity to transfer to nearby stores.

Several Gap Factory locations remain open throughout the East Bay.
