Police said officers were alerted around 10:29 p.m. Sunday about a robbery suspect vehicle entering San Francisco via the Bay Bridge. Officers located the vehicle, which had two people inside, near 5th and Folsom streets.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Mission and 1st Streets, but the driver fled, prompting a pursuit through city streets. The vehicle later became disabled near Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue, according to police.
Authorities said the driver then opened fire on officers, striking one officer multiple times. Officers shot back at the suspect vehicle. The driver fled on foot, while the passenger in the suspect vehicle was injured during the exchange.
Police transported both the officer and the passenger to the hospital, where both were being treated for life-threatening injuries.
The driver was later located near Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street and taken into custody without incident, police said.
A police presence remained Monday morning at San Francisco General Hospital as the investigation continued. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office is involved in the case. Police said they plan to hold a town hall meeting within 10 days to discuss what happened.
