San Jose looking to tax, regulate short term rentals like Airbnb

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose's City Council will likely approve one of America's first taxes on residents who rent their homes to people through services like Airbnb.

If approved, renters would pay a 10 percent tax, the same rate hotel guests already pay in San Jose.

The same law will legalize home sharing, which is technically illegal under San Jose law.

And it will cap the number of days a home could be rented.

The city will vote on the tax on Tuesday.
