SFO eyes launching a VIP terminal with private TSA screening for commercial fliers seeking luxury

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco International Airport is seeking proposals for a new private luxury terminal that would allow commercial airline passengers to bypass traditional airport security lines and access their flights through a VIP-style experience - for a fee.

The proposed terminal would be located near Signature Aviation, about six miles from the airport, according to SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel. Travelers using the facility would undergo separate TSA screening before being transported by car across the tarmac directly to their aircraft.

The terminal also would include a luxury lounge.

Airport officials say the concept could appeal to business travelers and others seeking a more private and streamlined travel experience.

The Bay Area's role in hosting major events, including the Super Bowl and the World Cup, could help drive demand for the service.

SFO is asking bidders to submit proposals to build and operate the private terminal by Oct. 7.

The selected operator would determine pricing, which could include either a membership model or a one-time fee.

Yakel said a similar service at another airport costs between $800 and $1,800 per use.

"I would say that, you know, the Jeff Bezos of the world, they already have their own aircraft. They already have a process in place. They don't need a product like this. This is more for people that don't have their own airplane that still fly commercial but want to pay for an elevated experience. That's really the niche we're trying to hit here," Yakel said.

Some travelers believe there could be a market for the service despite the cost.

"Now we see the TSA lines longer than the regular lines," said Peri Subrahmanya, a Foster City resident. "So, I feel, especially in the Bay Area with the kind of people, the demographic I think the price tag probably is not the issue. So people will be willing to pay for the service if it is helping them save time. It's all about, especially when you're a business owner or if you're a frequent flier, time is money."

The proposal comes amid a recent increase in demand for luxury travel services.

Similar offerings are available at airports including Los Angeles International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

If approved, the private terminal could open as early as late 2028.
