On September 2nd, Republic Airways flight attendant Monique Harris noticed a tired mother on her morning flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Grand Rapids, Michigan, holding onto a baby.
After watching the baby and her mother for a while, Harris decided to intervene and pick up the baby, as the mother slowly fell asleep with the baby in her lap, to make sure the baby didn't fall.
Moments later, Harris said, the mother woke up.
"When she saw me with the baby, her first thought was, 'Did I drop him?'" Harris reassured the mother and suggested that she rest for a while.
Harris told ABC News that the baby's mother explained her struggles with giving birth abroad and not being able, until recently, to fly back to the U.S. with her baby.
"She was tired. She had just returned to the States. Her family hadn't seen the baby yet or anything. And this is her return home flight," Harris said.
After thanking Harris, the mother took the baby back and held it for the rest of the flight.
Unknown to Harris, John Frehse had taken a picture of the moment and later would post it on social media.
Frehse praised Harris, writing, "Monique sprung into action and caught the child. She then told the mother to go back to sleep - she would give her a break."
The post got a lot of reaction on social media, with many people commenting on their experiences with Harris and praising her kindness and the impact she had on them.
"You know, there are small things that we can do that nobody may ever see, but it might have such an impact on somebody," Harris said after explaining a tradition she has done for her passengers for years: writing short notes and giving them to passengers.
For the mother of the baby, Harris says she wrote something along the lines of, "She was doing a great job, and that she's awesome already. She's more beautiful than she already knows. She's stronger than she feels."
After the viral post, Harris has not heard from the baby's parent, but says she has gotten lots of uplifting messages: "Some of the comments that I read are encouraging, you know, to remain me, you know, to remain who I am, just to be my own original self"
