SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- California's attorney general is urging the FCC to allow wholesale blocking of robocalls. The FCC is considering new rules allowing use of technology that can screen out illegal calls.

Currently, the FCC rules prevent phone companies from proactively blocking certain calls. That allows telemarketers to use fake caller ID phone numbers to trick consumers into picking up.

Under the new rules, carriers could screen out calls coming from unassigned phone numbers. That could prevent an estimated 2 billion unwanted calls every month.
