San Francisco supervisors approve measure prohibiting employers from asking salary history

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A new survey by Glassdoor, a Mill Valley-based job website, finds that most people think you should keep your salary history to yourself.

According to their survey more than half of people think employers shouldn't ask about prior salaries.

More women than men share that view because of the belief that it could perpetuate pay inequality.

Not surprisingly, almost three-quarters of people surveyed say salary and compensation is a big factor in deciding to accept a job offer.

The San Francisco supervisors just passed an ordinance which would prohibit employers from asking for past salary information during the hiring process.

Mayor Ed Lee is expected to sign it next week.
