Water main break causes sinkhole in downtown San Francisco intersection

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Firefighters say a water main break caused a small sinkhole to form in San Francisco's Financial District Tuesday night.

Crews were able to isolate and shut off the water pipe at California and Montgomery streets.

At one point, the water was seen shooting 5-10 feet in the air.

The sinkhole formed next to the California cable car line but the line doesn't appear to be affected. Cable cars were still running when our crews were on scene but it was close enough where the car was hit by water shooting out of the hole.

Fire crews say customers in the surrounding area may experience low water pressure or water service interruption as crews repair the break.
