SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Traffic came to a crawl on the Bay Bridge Thursday night during rush hour.
Just before 4:30 PM drivers started calling 911-- saying someone was dangling from the bridge.

TAKE ACTION: Get help with mental health issues
Officers shut down all five westbound lanes of the bridge for about 30 minutes. When they couldn't find the man they had the Coast Guard bring a boat underneath the bridge. They spotted the man on a ledge below.
A Coast Guard officer persuaded the man to come to safety.

CHP officers say this was the best possible outcome.
Officers say the man was a passenger in a car who then got out. He was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.
