Police are searching for a "very confused" elderly man who went missing today after he left a Hayward retirement home and did not return.

George Butler, 76, who suffers from Alzheimers and Dementia, walked away from the Casa Sandoval retirement center at 1200 Russell Way at about 9:20 a.m., according to the Hayward Police Department.

Butler told staff at the home he was going home, but his last known address was in New York and he has no money, police said.

He is described as a black man, about 6 feet 1 inch tall, 160 pounds and is bald with some gray hair and a full gray beard.

He was last seen wearing a light colored, possibly button up shirt over a dark colored long sleeve shirt and had on light colored pants and dark shoes, police said.

He goes by the nickname "Doctor George Butler."

Butler walks with a cane or walker but he left without either, police said. He has no money or credit cards and does not have the medication he requires.

Anyone with information on Butler's whereabouts is asked to immediately contact the Hayward Police Department at (510) 293-7000 or Casa Sandoval retirement home at (510) 727-1700.
