A 26-year-old man died this morning after being shot in the parking lot of a San Rafael nightclub, a San Rafael police spokeswoman said.

At about 12:25 a.m., officers were dispatched to the parking lot of Club 101, located at 815 Francisco Blvd. W., on reports of a shooting. Police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said officers located a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the club's parking lot.

Rohrbacher said the victim and his friends had just exited a vehicle in the parking lot when the gunman, who had exited another vehicle, approached them. The suspect fired multiple rounds, at least one of which struck the victim. No one else was injured by the gunfire, Rohrbacher said. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

The club's management shut down the club following the shooting. Rohrbacher said several vehicles left the parking lot after the shooting and no description of the suspect or the vehicle carrying the suspect was immediately available.

Authorities are interviewing the victim's friends and acquaintances and investigating the motive of the shooting, according to Rohrbacher.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact the San Rafael Police Department at (415) 485-3000.
