Ten California nail salons, including four in the Bay Area, have been cited for unsanitary conditions.under a state law that went into effect this year.

The measure was first approved in 2006 after several bacterial outbreaks at California salons. In one case, a Mountain View woman died after contracting an infection during a pedicure.

The new law allows the state board of barbering and cosmetology to take immediate action against salons if they fail to follow health and safety standards.

The salons that were put on temporary probation last month include:
- Nail Trix at Northgate Mall in San Rafael
- Grand Nails on Grand Avenue in Oakland
- Diamond Nails on Union Street in San Francisco
- Zen Nail Spa on West Portal in San Francisco.
