Police were called to the 500 block of South 11th Street at about 7 a.m. on reports of a major-injury accident, Sullivan said. Arriving officers found the 2-year-old boy dead.
A family member was warming up a truck behind the apartment complex on South 11th Street when the toddler apparently exited the house through an open door unbeknownst to his mother, Sullivan said.
The mother reportedly realized the door was open and went to look for her child when the family member was slowly backing up and struck the child.
Speed was not a factor in the accident, Sullivan said.
"This is a horrible tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family members," Sullivan said.
