Mercedes-Benz says its new electric-powered vehicle will be on the road within two to three years.

The small car is expected to run 80 miles or more on a single charge of its lithium-ion batteries. Those are the same type batteries commonly found in laptop computers and cell phones.

The car would be recharged by plugging into an electric outlet.

General Motors and Chevrolet are also working on pure electric vehicles.
