All lanes of Interstate Highway 880 in Newark reopened at about 1:55 p.m. today following a fatal collision that temporarily slowed down traffic in both directions, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 21-year-old Newark man who was riding his motorcycle northbound alongside his friend died when he lost control, ramming into the highway's center divide around 12:30 p.m., CHP Officer Oscar Johnson said.

The accident, just north of Central Avenue, closed northbound lane Nos. 1 and 2, significantly backing up traffic, according to Johnson.

The No. 1 lane on the southbound side was also temporarily blocked.

A Sig-alert issued at 12:31 p.m. was canceled at 1:55 p.m., CHP Officer Kevin Kroncke said.
