BERKELEY, CA

At about 2:45 a.m., the Berkeley Police Department received a report of someone brandishing a knife, and officers responded to the rear of 2421 Piedmont Ave., said police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

We talked to a police spokesperson who says they have arrested a suspect. They are not sharing his name at this point, but they did reveal he is a 20-year-old man from South Berkeley who graduated from Berkeley High School.

The victim, Chris Wootton, was from Southern California. When police arrived, there were roughly 20 people surrounding Wootton. The victim was transported by an ambulance where he soon died on the way to the hospital.

"It's devastating because I knew him. I knew his girlfriend, his girlfriend is in my sorority. It's tough. I can't imagine what she is going through right now. It's really sad. He's a really nice guy, it's just really sad," says a friend who was close to the victim.

Wootton was a fraternity member at Sigma Pi. Students and residents continue to leave flowers in front of the fraternity house.
