Thousands of bicyclists will ride from Daly City's Cow Palace to Santa Cruz this morning for a weeklong journey to Los Angeles to raise millions of dollars for AIDS services.

Today will kick off the 545-mile bike ride for the annual AIDS/Lifecycle event. Riders will pedal through 79.3 of those miles today in an attempt to raise more than last year's $12 million.

County health departments and AIDS/Lifecycle supporters along the route will hand out free condoms with the message "Ride Safe" written on the packaging.

About 2,500 cyclists are expected to participate.
