Preliminary reports indicate the crash happened after a small car traveling south had a tire failure just south of Marina Boulevard at about 9:15 a.m. The car veered from the fast lane to the No. 2 or 3 lane, California Highway Patrol Officer A. Paulson said.
That caused a big rig to swerve into and over the center divide.
Two other trucks were also involved in the crash -- a flatbed truck and a small delivery truck carrying coffins, Paulson said.
The drivers of the coffin delivery truck and the big rig were pronounced dead at the scene.
Southbound lanes reopened by about 3:30 p.m. and soon after 6 p.m. the No. 3, 4 and 5 lanes also opened.
The remaining lanes reopened shortly after 7 p.m.
