A two-alarm fire that ripped through a Pittsburg apartment building today displaced 10 families and the American Red Cross has been called to assist, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokeswoman Emily Hopkins said.

The fire was reported at 2:14 p.m. at 500 Loveridge Circle. Initial reports indicated that three apartments in the Loveridge Terrace Apartment building were reportedly on fire and the blaze had moved into the attic, Hopkins said.

The fire was declared under control at 3:17 p.m. and firefighters were able to contain the blaze to just three units. An electrical panel was burned, however, cutting off power to the building, which is why so many families were displaced.

No injuries were reported and firefighters were even able to save a litter of kittens, Hopkins said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Damages were estimated to be about $250,000.
