Program to reduce traffic on 101 in the works

Officials are planning a $30 million system on highway 101 to help drivers get around big back-ups.

Electronic messages will warn drivers to get off the freeway and then show them how to navigate surface streets. Traffic lights would be synchronized along the detour route to help the flow of traffic.

The so-called "smart corridor" program could be implemented within two years.
