SF holiday transit options and closures

SAN FRANCISCO

The fireworks show beginning at 9:30 p.m. Friday on the waterfront near Pier 39, and entertainment events beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Pier 39, Aquatic Park and Ghirardelli Square are expected to draw as many as 200,000 people.

Shuttle buses to Pier 39 and Aquatic Park will begin running at 2 p.m. Friday on the Embarcadero and Bay Street, transit officials said. Sixty shuttles will bring riders from the Caltrain Fourth and King streets station, from the Ferry Building, and from Van Ness Avenue and Market Street.

Shuttles will return from the Embarcadero and Bay Street to the Ferry Building and Caltrain and from Francisco and Polk to Van Ness and Market after the fireworks show until 11:20 p.m.

Regular Muni service will resume when crowds have dispersed, officials said.

While public transportation will be augmented for easy riding, driving in the city may be difficult due to scheduled street closures beginning as early as this morning.

Jefferson Street from Aquatic Park to Hyde Street is scheduled to close between 8 a.m. today and 5 p.m. Saturday, and Jefferson between Hyde and Powell streets from 2 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday, transit officials said.

Numerous other streets will close Friday. Van Ness between North Point Street and the Municipal Pier Terminus and Beach Street west of Polk Street will close from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., officials said.

Northbound Columbus Avenue from Bay Street will close 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, and the Marina Boulevard exit from Doyle Drive will close 8:30 p.m. to midnight. Northbound Embarcadero from Broadway will close and southbound Embarcadero will detour at Howard Street from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., transit officials said.

Depending on crowds, additional sections of streets may close as early as 5 p.m. Friday, officials said. Information about closures can be found online at www.sfmta.com or by calling 311.

Parking rules will be on a holiday schedule, and Muni will run on a Sunday schedule for the holiday.

Some Muni lines will be rerouted due to the anticipated crowds. The F-Market, 10-Townsend, 9X-Bayshore, 12-Folsom, 19-Polk, 30-Stockton, 39-Coit, 47-Van Ness and 49-Van Ness/Mission service will be rerouted, and the Hyde cable car will be replaced with a shuttle bus, Muni officials said.

The 91-Owl, 22-Fillmore and 45-Union/Stockton may be affected by pedestrian traffic after the fireworks show, officials said.
